Sophia Berg Named CoSIDA Academic All-American

Greenwood, Ind. – One week after being named an All-American for the first time, Angelo State volleyball senior Sophia Berg earns her second all-American honor, this time for her work in the classroom as she earns a spot on the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Third Team Academic All-America, the organization announced this morning.

This comes one month after the senior middle was named to the First Team Academic All-District.

The LSC Academic Player of the Year, who was a three-time selection to the LSC All-Academic Team, finishes her academic career with a 4.00 GPA while majoring in Biology.

On the court, the Georgetown native racked up 678 kills in four seasons, hitting .244 for her career. She finished her career with 287 blocks, ninth-most in the rally scoring era in the program's history.

Additionally, Berg was named an AVCA All-South Central Region Honorable Mention as well as an AVCA All-American Honorable Mention for her performances on the court this season for the Belles.

This is the 52nd time since 1983 that an Angelo State student-athlete has earned CoSIDA Academic All-American honors; Berg is first Angelo State athlete to receive CoSIDA Academic All-American honors since Marissa Brezgiel (women's soccer) this past year.

She becomes only the second player to be named an Academic All-American under head coach Chuck Waddington, joining Katelyn MacLeay, who earned it in 2015; also, Berg becomes the fourth-ever Belle in the program's history to earn the honor, joining MacLeay, Marci Sanders (1998) and Mary Tschirhart (1984).
