SAN ANGELO, Texas – The 11
th-ranked Angelo State women's tennis team will travel for two matches this weekend, taking on Western New Mexico on Friday before opening Lone Star Conference play against UT Permian Basin on Saturday.
With last week's match postponed to April 3, the Belles have had nearly three weeks to recover from a busy February schedule. ASU has won two matches in a row, defeating Southwest Baptist 4-3 and Southeastern Oklahoma 4-2 back on Mar. 5.
Holding a 5-3 overall record in dual play, the Belles came in at No. 11 in the latest ITA/Oracle Division II Team Rankings, earning the highest ranking in program history.
Ena Ovcina leads the Belles with a 7-1 record in singles play, followed by
Virginie Becht with a 5-2 record and
Zoe Gubbels at 4-3. Overall, ASU holds a 16-11 singles record in dual play. In doubles, the Belles are 9-4 as a team with Becht and Gubbels holding a 3-0 record as a team while Ovcina and
Valentina Gonzalez are 3-1 and
Maria Delgadillo and
Ayda Guler are 3-2.
Western New Mexico enters the weekend with a 2-6 overall record, picking up both wins against NAIA opponents Ottawa University and Arizona Christian, sweeping both matches. Since then, the Mustangs have lost six straight including 0-4 losses in their last two matches.
UTPB has also had a slow start to the season, holding a 2-7 overall record. The Falcons defeated Southwest 5-0 and McMurry 8-1 and also tallied a 4-3 win over Colling Country CC. UTPB split its last two matches, falling to UTEP 4-0 on Mar. 20.
The Belles are 2-0 all-time against Western New Mexico and hold a 3-0 record against the Falcons.
