SAN ANGELO – After a 3-1 opening weekend, the Angelo State women's tennis team returns to the courts this weekend for a pair of matches in the Sooner State, facing Northeastern State on Sunday and Southeastern Oklahoma on Monday in Tahlequah and Durant, respectively.
The Belles rebounded from an opening-season loss to Mississippi College to win their final three games in Arkadelphia two weekends ago, shutting out Ouachita Baptist 7-0 and beating both Henderson State and Delta State by a score of 6-1.
For her 6-1 weekend in both singles and doubles play in her first taste of collegiate tennis,
Eva Schwartz was named the LSC Women's Tennis Player of the Week.
The Belles have won 10 of 12 doubles matches this season and have claimed the doubles' point in all four matches this season; the no. 2 doubles pair of
Ayda Guler and
Ramitha Irrinki, the ITA Regional Championship runners-up, are a perfect 4-0 in doubles play this season.
The Belles have faced the Riverhawks and the Savage Storm once, beating both teams. They defeated Northeastern State back in 2020, 5-2, and downed Southeastern Oklahoma 4-2 last spring.
Northeastern State is 1-2 this spring, with a win over Arkansas Tech and losses last weekend to Harding and DBU; the Riverhawks were picked to finish sixth in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll.
Southeastern Oklahoma is 3-0 this spring with a trio of wins over LSC competition. A 6-1 win over Ut Permian Basin preceded a pair of 5-2 victories over DBU and UT Tyler. The Savage Storm were picked to finish second in the GAC Preseason Poll.
Following this weekend, the Belles' next match will be at home against UT Permian Basin on March 3
rd to open LSC play.
