SAN ANGELO –
Brian Singleton scored nine of his 19 points in the overtime period to help lift Texas A&M-Commerce past a pair of 20-point scoring efforts from Angelo State's LaMarshall Corbett and Ridge McKeither, 102-98, in a Lone Star Conference crossover clash at the Junell Center Thursday night.

Singleton, who was scoreless in the second half after chipping in 10 first half points, shot 3-for-4 from the field in extra time including a pair of three pointers to push the Lions (5-0) past the Rams (0-3). Corbett led all scorers with 29 points and combined with McKeither (27) to score 56 of Angelo State's season-best 102. McKeither added 11 rebounds to post his second double-double in three games.

“We didn't come out with enough energy,” McKeither said. “We didn't match their energy in overtime and that hurt us. There were a lot of 50-50 balls that they got and they out-rebounded us. We've got to gang rebound, instead of individuals.”

Angelo State led by as many as 12 points in the first half while shooting a blistering 59.3 percent in the first half, before settling for a 48-47 advantage at the break. The Rams hit their first seven shots of the contest, but cooled off in the second half, shooting just 39.5 percent from the field. The Rams pushed their advantage back to seven points by the 12:28 mark in the second half but couldn't distance themselves any further.

Desmond King, who scored a team-best 27 points, put the Lions on his shoulders and scored seven-consecutive points for Commerce, five unanswered to trim the ASU lead to a single point at 6:59. From there, the game saw three ties and two lead changes over the next four minutes before Trey Mays hit a three-pointer to give ASU an 84-81 advantage and momentum.

Mays pulled down a rebound on the other end of the floor and Steven Moore added two additional points off free throws to make it an 86-81 lead with 1:27 to play but the Lions weren't done. Three more points by King and a late three-pointer by Austin Brown fueled a 7-0 run to give Commerce a two-point advantage. Angelo State forced overtime when McKeither sunk a contested lay-up off a nifty pass from Moore as time expired.

“It was a good find, just good court awareness by Steve Moore,” McKeither said. “It's a play that we work on every day in practice. We just executed it.”

In the overtime period, Corbett and ASU struck first by hitting the second end of a two-shot trip to the free throw line, but Singleton answered with a three pointer on the other end and followed up with a jumper in the paint to make it a 93-89 Lion lead. Singleton added another three in the overtime period and the Lions never trailed.

Moore (13) and Richard Thomas (12) joined Corbett and McKeither in double figures. Corbett grabbed a career-best six rebounds, as did Trey Mays.

Brad Hambrick (17), Austin Brown (11) and Tyris Dowell (10) were among five Commerce players in double digits. In addition to leading the Lions in scoring, King pulled down a team-best nine rebounds.

The Rams return to action next Wednesday, Dec. 8, when they host St. Mary's at the Junell Center/Stephens Arena for a 7 p.m. non-conference clash.
