SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team snapped Texas Woman's six-game winning streak defeating the Pioneers, 54-45, behind a career-high 19-point effort by sophomore
Lindsey Mahone. The Rambelles had a trio of 'Belles in double-figures as they improved to 4-1 on the season.
On top of 19 points, the Corpus Christi native added six rebounds. Three other 'Belles (
Lauren Holt,
Paige Weishuhn,
Ashley James) also collected half-a-dozen boards in the victory. Senior guard
Camille Perkins registered 13 points, five rebound, three steals and a pair of assists, while freshman
Krysta Martinez tallied 10 points, eight boards, two assists and one steal.
Mahone got the 'Belles going in the first half as she knocked down three consecutive buckets to give the Rambelles a 6-0 advantage. Angelo State's defense did not allow Texas Woman's (6-2) to score for almost six minutes. TWU's senior guard Brooke Shepherd got the Pioneers on the board when she sunk the back end of a pair of free throws. However, that would be all the Pioneers' offense could muster until a Tabbatha Thurmond jumper at 12:14 cut the 'Belles' lead to six points (9-3).
After that early offensive surge by the 'Belles, both teams were unable to sink very many field goals. The 'Belles shot 19.4 percent from the floor, 63.6 percent from the charity stripe and were unable to connect for a three in the first half. The Pioneers shooting was similar as TWU shot 15.4 percent from the floor, 10 percent in three-pointers and 44.4 percent from the free throw line in the opening 20 minutes.
The second half brought life back to both teams, as the Rambelles improved their shooting and shot 52.4 percent in field goals, 50 percent from beyond the arc and 60 percent from the free throw line. The Pioneers also showed improvement, shooting 32.4 percent from the floor, 8.3 percent in treys and 70 percent from the charity stripe.
Texas Woman's was able to pull within four points (34-30) on a three by Kayla Weaver, but the 'Belles would not allow the Pioneers to come any closer. The Rambelles countered as Martinez and Holt hit both of their free throws in back-to-back chances while Mahone connected for a pair of jumpers on consecutive possessions to give Angelo State a double-digit lead once again (44-34). The rest of the game was all ASU as the 'Belles hit their mark and went on to win their fourth game of the season, 54-45.
The Pioneers were led by Weaver, who had a team-best 16 points. She also contributed six boards, two assists, a block and one steal. Jeanee' Thompson led both teams in rebounds with 13 and collected six points.
The Rambelles hit the road next week when they travel to the Sooner State to take on Central Oklahoma Saturday, Dec. 11, at 2 p.m. in Edmond, Okla., and Northeastern State Monday, Dec. 13, at 6 p.m. in Tahlequah, Okla.
