LAWTON, Okla. – It's rarely good when your pregame questions for the opposing coach are met with a sinister grin. That was the case Thursday night when Angelo State head coach Fred Rike asked Cameron head coach Wade Alexander what happened to former Aggie guard Dylan Gilliam. He's back. Gilliam tied for the team lead with 16 points in his first action since the 2008-09 season while helping the Aggies defend their home court against Angelo State, 79-71, Thursday night.
Gilliam, Thomas Razor (16), Milton Garner (15) and Vinicius Telo (10) all reached double figures in scoring while helping Cameron (10-4) reach double figures in the win column at Aggie Gym. Angelo State's
Richard Thomas led all scorers with 21 points off the bench, but his effort and a combined 57.7 percent shooting effort in the second half couldn't help the Rams (3-8) rally from a seven-point halftime deficit.
LaMarshall Corbett (17) and
Ridge McKeither (14) also reached double digits in scoring for ASU, but an onslaught of three pointers and the return of Gilliam, who averaged 17.4 points in just nine games two seasons ago before being dismissed from the team, proved too much. Cameron shot 48 percent from beyond the arc, hitting 12-of-25 shots from long range.
Angelo State managed to out-rebound Cameron, 31-29, but the Aggies used 13 offensive boards, including three from Terry Dawson. Angelo State guard
Steven Moore led all rebounders with nine boards. In addition to its sharpshooting from distance, Cameron went 23-for-27 at free throw line as the Rams committed 22 personal fouls.
Angelo State played a sizeable portion of the first half without its leading scorer Corbett, who picked up two fouls in the first 90 seconds of the game, but still put together an early 11-0 run while building a seven point lead with 9:30 to go in the first period. Once Cameron got ahead, however, it would never relinquish the lead. Angelo State pulled within one at 53-52 with 11:31 to go in the second half, cutting down a 12-point Aggie lead, but two threes and a pair of free throws put Cameron back in command.
The Rams continue their Oklahoma road swing with another LSC crossover contest against Southwestern Oklahoma at 4 p.m. Saturday in Weatherford.
