WEATHERFORD, Okla. – With 10 seconds left in regulation, senior
Camille Perkins sunk a lay-up off her own rebound to give the Angelo State women's basketball team a 60-59 win over host Southwestern Oklahoma State Saturday afternoon in Weatherford, Okla. Perkins led all scorers with a new season-high 29 points in the Belles' victory.
Perkins also added three rebounds, two assists and one steal for the Rambelles (7-5). Junior
Paige Weishuhn cleaned up the glass with a team-best 10 rebounds. The post out of Wall recorded eight points, three blocks and one assist. Sophomore
Lindsey Youngblood registered eight points, a pair of boards and two steals, while sophomore
Ashley James tallied five points, nine rebounds, four steals and three assists.
Southwestern Oklahoma (8-4) took an early lead over the visiting Belles with a lay-up by Alex Foster. However, the Rambelles stayed within striking distance and eventually took a 16-15 lead of their own on a trey by James. But, six unanswered points by the Bulldogs put the hosts up 26-20. Southwestern Oklahoma continued to build on its lead and eventually took its largest lead of the game (34-24) on a lay-up by SaRaya Oyler. The Bulldogs closed out the first half on a with an eight-point advantage taking a 36-28 lead into the locker room.
Angelo State came out in the second half ready to play as Perkins knocked down a three-pointer followed by a lay-up by Weishuhn to cut the Bulldogs' lead to three (36-33). The Belles closed the gap on the Bulldogs' lead and eventually regained their lead on a Perkins lay-up (41-40).
The two teams traded baskets and matched each other both offensively and defensively keeping the score close. James broke a 49-49 tie with a lay-up to give the Rambelles a 51-49 advantage. James' lay-up jump-started a 7-0 run by the Belles giving ASU a 56-49 advantage. However, the Bulldogs chipped away at the Belles' lead and eventually tied the game at 58 apiece with just 1:15 left in the game.
After a Rambelle foul, Oyler took to the free throw line for the Bulldogs missing the first shot, but sinking the second to put the hosts up 59-58 with 40 seconds left in the game. At the 13 second mark, Perkins missed a lay-up, but grabbed her own rebound and made her second lay-up attempt to put the Belles up 60-59 with just 10 seconds left in the game. The Belles were able to hold on to their one-point lead as time expired and the Rambelles collected win number seven on the season.
The Bulldogs were led by Sumiya Darden who came off the bench and recorded a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Darden also added two steals and one block in the setback. Jasmine Noldon registered 13 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals, while Shanessa Smith tallied eight points, four boards and two blocks for the Bulldogs.
Angelo State returns to the Junell Center for a game against Midwestern State on Wednesday, Jan. 12, at 5:30 p.m. Both live video and live stats will be available for the contest.
