CANYON, Texas – Morgan Youngblood had 11 points to lead the Angelo State women's basketball team, but the Belles dropped a 58-47 decision to St. Mary's University Friday evening in the opening game of the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs Thanksgiving Classic in Canyon.
Youngblood chipped-in with six rebounds, two steals and led the Belles (1-3) with three assists.
Lauren Holt nearly had a double-double for ASU with nine points and a season-high 10 rebounds. Freshman
Haylee Oliver, making her first career start for Angelo State, had eight points and seven rebounds.
The Belles started the game strong defensively, holding the Lady Rattlers without a point until just under the 16-minute mark in the first half while leading 6-0. ASU was unable to take advantage as the Belles struggled shooting from the outside, but converted 8-of-10 free throws to stay in contention with St. Mary's, who lead at the half, 22-17.
After the Belles cut the lead to three on a Holt jumper to begin the second half, St. Mary's took control of the game for the rest of the half, leading by 21 at one point as Angelo State's struggles offensively continued in the second half. ASU was able to cut the lead back down to 11 with nearly a minute left, before the Lady Rattler's sealed the game at the free throw line.
St. Mary's DeAnna Patterson had 17 points to lead the Lady Rattlers (1-6) while Jackie Edwards added 11.
Angelo State will play its final game of the tournament tomorrow at 4 p.m. versus fifth-ranked Metro State before returning home on Wednesday, Nov. 30 to play Texas Woman's for its Lone Star Conference opener. That contest is set to tip-off at 6 p.m. at the Junell Center/Stephens Arena.
