Javae King-Gilchrist hit a layup with 3 seconds remaining to lift the Rams to a 61-60 non-conference win over Southeastern Oklahoma State on Saturday at the St. Mary's River City Classic.
Hanif Nixon-Hughes finished with a double-double, leading the Rams with 16 points and 12 rebounds as ASU (4-2) outscored the Savage Storm 40-27 in the second half to bounce back from a loss to St. Mary's on Friday at the San Antonio tournament. Nixon-Hughes scored 10 of his 16 from the free throw line, while Reggie Brice added 14 and
Joey Lenox 12 (4-of-9 from beyond the arch) to account for Rams in double-digit scoring in the win over their former Lone Star Conference foe from Oklahoma.
King-Gilchrist, a junior transfer from Jacksonville College, scored nine points and
Xavier Chargois added six more for the Rams who trailed 10-0 to start the game and went into halftime down 33-21.
Dakota Rawls added four points and four rebounds, while Brice secured seven rebounds and had three steals.
ASU, which last led on a Rawls dunk to give the Rams an 18-17 advantage with 5:03 seconds remaining in the first half before King-Gilchrist's layup, bounced back from shooting 17.1 percent in the first half to hit four of its seven 3-pointers in the second half to improve to 2-1 in neutral court games this season.
Urald King led Southeastern Oklahoma (2-5) with 14 points, while Ivan Anderson contributed 13 and Stephen Kohli 11 for the team now playing in the Great American Conference.
Angelo State returns to action at 7 p.m. on Thursday against Arlington Baptist at the Junell Center/Stephens Arena. The Rams will also host St. Mary's at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3 in a rematch of a 81-63 win by the Rattlers on Friday in the first game of the St. Mary's River City Classic.
