CANYON, Texas – The Angelo State women's basketball team dropped a 68-55 contest to No. 5 Metro State Saturday evening in its tournament finale at the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs Thanksgiving Classic in Canyon.
The Belles (1-4) lost despite strong efforts from sophomore
Leah LeMaire and freshman
Haylee Oliver, who tied for the team lead in points with 10 apiece. Oliver also added four rebounds and an assist in her second career start.
LeMaire scored in double figures for the first time since Feb. 27, 2010 against West Texas A&M after missing all of last season because of injuries. The Corpus Christi native shot 4-of-7 from the field and added a rebound to her stat line.
Morgan Youngblood nearly had a double-double for Angelo State with nine points and eight rebounds while
Ashley James scored eight points to go with six assists.
Angelo State played the Roadrunners tough throughout the first half with the largest deficit being only six points before the final minute. After a free throw by Metro State's Amy Nelson at the 11:38 mark that gave Metro State a 16-11 lead, ASU went on an 8-2 run thanks to a converted and-one play by freshman
Devon Wilde that cut the lead to two.
Oliver followed with a three-point basket that gave the Belles a 17-16 lead before MSC responded with a pair of free throws by Jenessa Burke. A jumper by James gave ASU the lead back with just under seven minutes to play in the first half.
Angelo State stayed in contention with the fifth-ranked team in the nation before the Roadrunners pulled away in the final minute of the first half, including a three-pointer by Alyssa Benson that gave Metro State a 10-point advantage going into the break.
The Roadrunners would keep the lead for the remainder of the game leading by 18 at one point in the second half.
Burke and Emily Wood led Metro State (4-0) with 15 points each while Caley Dow had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Belles will return to the Junell Center/Stephens Arena on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 6 p.m. to take on Texas Woman's for their first Lone Star Conference game of the season.
