SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Ashley James hit a free throw with four seconds left to give the Angelo State women's basketball team a 55-54 victory over St. Mary's Saturday evening at the Bill Greehey Arena in San Antonio.

James' free throw was the ninth lead change of the game and enough to help the Belles avenge their early season loss to the Lady Rattlers on Nov. 25, in the West Texas A&M Tournament.

Paige Weishuhn led ASU with 14 points and nine rebounds, while Haylee Oliver and Morgan Youngblood each added 12. Weishuhn, who missed the first St. Mary's game because of injury, shot 6-of-7 from the field including 2-of-3 from behind the arc.

The Belles led at the half, 35-21, behind 10 first-half points from Weishuhn before the Lady Rattlers battled back to tie the game at 45-45 with 8:28 to play. All nine lead changes occurred in the final half including five in the last five minutes.

An Oliver three pointer gave the Belles a 54-52 lead with 2:35 left to play before a pair of St. Mary's free throws by DeAnna Patterson tied the game at 54-54.

The score would remain unchanged until the final minute when the Belles' defense stepped up thanks to a Leah LeMaire block and gave ASU the ball back with 23 seconds left to play. After a LeMaire missed jumper with eight seconds left, Weishuhn grabbed the offensive board and found James who was fouled.

James hit the first of two free throws giving the Belles the lead at 55-54 before missing the second giving the Lady Rattlers a final shot with three seconds left, but LeMaire stole the ball to secure the victory.

Patterson had 17 points to pace St. Mary's (1-9) while Liz Boyd added 13. Felicia Jacobs had 13 boards for the Lady Rattlers.

The Belles will continue to be on the road as they travel to Oklahoma to play Cameron on Dec. 7 before returning home to play Midwestern State on Dec. 12.
