LAWTON, Okla. – Angelo State freshman
Cassi Stegall had a career-high 12 points, but it was not enough as the Belles basketball team dropped its first Lone Star Conference game of the year at Cameron, 56-50, in the Aggie Gym.
Stegall added four rebounds for the Belles (3-5, 1-1 LSC) who saw their two-game win streak snap at the hands of the Aggies. The Hico native also hit one of the ASU's two three-point field goals in the game as cold outside shooting plagued the Belles, who went just 2-of-16 from downtown.
Morgan Youngblood nearly had a double-double for the Belles with nine points and eight rebounds while
Ashley James also had nine points for ASU.
ASU had foul issues in the first half as
Leah LeMaire and
Paige Weishuhn picked up quick fouls early limiting them the rest of the game and both would eventually foul out in the second half. Weishuhn, the Belles leading scorer going into the game at 15.4 points per contest, was held to a season-low four points in only 17 minutes.
The Aggies (4-2, 2-1 LSC) controlled the game for the most part in the first half holding a seven point advantage over ASU, 17-10, at 11:15 before the Belles rallied close the score at 20-18 just under the six minute mark. ASU briefly took over the lead, 25-23, with 40 seconds left before Cameron regained it to go into the half with a 27-25 advantage.
Cameron came out of the second half scoring the first four points while holding the Belles without a field goal until the 15:23 mark on a James' jumper. Angelo State stayed within distance of the Aggies, never trailing by more than six until Weishuhn tied the game on a pair of free throws at 39-39 with 8:21 left to play.
The Belles then took their largest lead of the game on a Stegall jumper that put ASU up 43-40 with 6:34 remaining in the game.
Cameron responded with 12-0 run, with the majority of the points coming after Weishuhn picked up her fifth foul at the 4:07 mark. The Belles were held without a field goal until a
Lauren Holt jumper with 18 seconds left. By that point, CU had pushed its lead to nine points, the largest deficit of the game.
Nicole Pendarvis had 14 points for Cameron, while Julie Paunovic added 13. Sabelle Diata had a double-double for the Aggies with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Angelo State will return home to host LSC foe Midwestern State on Monday, Dec. 12 with tip-off slated to begin for the Belles at 5:30 p.m.
