SAN ANTONIO – The Rams baseball team split a doubleheader at Sullivan Field against Lone Star Conference foe Incarnate Word Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals were victorious in the first game, 9-4, and the Rams came back in the night cap, 6-3, to hand UIW its first loss of the 2011 season.
Incarnate Word (3-1, 3-0 LSC) quickly went up 1-0 when Steven Vidaurri tripled to right with two outs in the bottom of the first. Matt Roohan drove Vidaurri home with a single up the middle. However, the Rams (3-4, 2-4 LSC) would not allow themselves to be swept in the four-game series. The following inning, ASU leftfielder
Garrett Harris singled to right, stole second and moved to third on
Zach Klink's bouncer back to the mound. He crossed the plate and tied the game when catcher
Toby Semler hit a sacrifice fly to right field.
With the game tied at one, the Rams drove in four runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-1 lead. Centerfielder
Matt Rechkemmer led off the inning with a single and stole second base. Second baseman
Zach Cohen reached base on a walk, and both moved into scoring position as shortstop
Marcellous Biggins sacrificed them over. Rightfielder
Tate Allison singled to left scoring both Rechkemmer and Cohen, before third baseman
Zak Leonhardt doubled down the rightfield line plating Allison. Leonhardt scored the Rams' fourth run of the inning when first baseman
Zach Klink singled to left.
The Cardinals tacked on a run in the fifth and another in the sixth, but they could not catch the Rams. Angelo State added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning and snapped their three-game losing skid with a 6-3 non-conference, seven inning victory.
Rick Reyna (1-0) earned the win after going 5.0 innings and allowing three runs on five hits and struck out two.
James Conlee picked up the save after pitching 2.0 innings of work and not allowing a run. He scattered two hits and struck out Derrick Walls to end the game.
Incarnate Word's Colin Carmody (0-1) was tagged with the loss after pitching 0.1 innings and allowing four runs on three hits and giving up one walk.
In the earlier game, the Rams were able to score early, plating two runs in the top of the first. However, their bats were silenced for the next seven innings as Keith Vasquez (1-0) hurled 5.0 innings of work allowing just one earned run on four hits.
The Cardinals, meanwhile, scored five runs in the bottom of the first off of Rams' starter
Bryant Rutledge (0-1). Rutledge fanned 10, but gave up five runs, three earned, on seven hits and walked four. Incarnate Word added two runs in the sixth and seventh innings to take a 9-2 advantage.
Although the Rams scored two more runs in the ninth, they were unable to pull out a come-from-behind-win, as they fell, 9-4, to the Cardinals in a nine inning Lone Star Conference game.
The Rams return to action Friday, Feb. 18, when they host Texas A&M-Kingsville in a LSC game at 4 p.m. Live stats and live video are available.
