ABILENE – Camille Perkins scored 19 of her game-high 28 points in the second half, and chipped in eight of Angelo State's last 15 points to help the Rambelles close out a 68-62 Lone Star Conference win over Abilene Christian at Moody Coliseum Monday. Angelo State also benefitted from 30 Abilene Chrsitian turnovers, including two in the last 32 seconds with the Wildcats trailing by just two points.
Perkins was on target throughout the game, hitting 10-of-14 shots overall from the field, but turned up her game even more by hitting all but two of her nine attempts – both misses from beyond the arc – in the second half.
Lindsey Mahone added 12 points for Angelo State (12-8, 5-3 LSC South) and
Karli Kellermeier contributed nine. Kelsey Smith led Abilene Christian (7-13, 4-4 LSC South) with 22 points as one of three Wildcat players in double figures.
Although the score was similar to the meeting between the two teams on Saturday – a 67-63 win by the Belles at the Junell Center – it was a much different contest from the outset. Angelo State led for much of Saturday's game but trailed by as many as five in the early going Monday night as the two teams fought to eight ties in the first half alone. Autumn Whitaker was a big part of the Wildcats success in the first half as she led all scorers with 10 points and ACU led 32-31 at the break. The first half featured 11 lead changes, a stark contrast from the four lead changes for the entire game Saturday.
The Rambelles launched an aerial assault in the opening minutes of the second half with their first four field goals coming from three-point range. Perkins nailed three shots from beyond the arc, sandwiched around a three ball by Kellermeier, and free throws from both Youngblood sisters and
Paige Weishuhn helped ASU to a six-point lead, 48-42 as the game reached the midpoint of the second half. Angelo State pushed its lead to eight points at 55-47 – the largest margin by either team – with 6:44 to go, but the Wildcats clawed back and regained the lead with a minute to play.
Trailing 62-61, Perkins drove the lane and drew a foul with 47 seconds left of the clock, then hit both free throws to give the Belles their final lead. ACU had three possessions in the final 40 seconds of the game but two turnovers and a missed lay-up in the final seconds left the Wildcats empty handed and on the losing end.
Lindsey Youngblood, Mahone and Kellermeier sealed the win for ASU by combining with Perkins seven free throws to close the game.
Mack Lankford scored 15 for Abilene Christian to complete its double digit scoring. Sarah Reno led all players with 11 rebounds as the Wildcats held a 35-21 edge on the glass.
Winners of three in a row, Angelo State returns to the Junell Center for another match-up against Texas A&M-Kingsville Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m. The Belles defeated the Javelinas 68-50 in Kingsville on Jan. 19. ASU's men will match-up with Texas A&M-Kingsville in the night cap to start at roughly 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night is San Angelo Heroes Night, with all police, fire, EMS and other emergency management personnel receiving free admission with proper identification.
