BARTLESVILLE, Okla. – Camille Perkins led Angelo State with 18 points, including 11 after halftime, but the Belles were overmatched in a 76-52 loss to Central Oklahoma Lone Star Conference Tournament play at Bruin Field House Wednesday afternoon. Angelo State ends its season at 17-10 overall, a five-game improvement from the 2009-10 season.
Perkins was limited to 4-of-19 shooting from the field as the Belles were held under 30 percent as a team, but the senior from Groesbeck, Texas, converted 9-of-10 from the free throw line to lead ASU.
Paige Weishuhn added 14 for Angelo State. The Lady Bronchos, who had four players in double figures, improved to 3-1 all-time in the LSC Tournament against ASU and the Belles dropped to 1-3 in tournament games played in Bartlesville.
Just one basket seperated the teams at the 7:24 mark of the first half when UCO led 19-16, but the the No. 2-seed Lady Bronchos closed the opening period on a 15-6 run an led by double figures (34-22) at the break. Both Weishuhn and
Lindsey Youngblood had three fouls in the first half for the seven-player Rambelle squad.
Alyssa Fuxa scored 15 of her game-high 20 points after halftime, part of an effort that saw the Central Oklahoma lead double to 24 points in the first eight minutes of the second half. Angelo State couldn't find an answer defensively as the Bronchos shot 40.3 percent from the field in the game. Ashley Beckley added 14 points and 10 rebounds for UCO and post-player Alex Richardson added 16 on 7-of-11 shooting.
"We didn't play very good defense," Angelo State head coach Sally Brooks said. "We played good defense all year long, and defense is what has kept us in the game. We shot the ball this poorly a bunch all year; it's always been a struggle. From the beginning to the end (today), we didn't play good defense."
Perkins, the Rambelles only senior, closed her career as the No. 2 scorer in Angelo State history with 1,746 points over four seasons. Perkins led the Belles to three Lone Star Conference Tournament appearances and was named to the All-LSC South Division First Team for the fourth time in her career Tuesday night.
"We're disappointed in the way we played today, but other than that there is nothing disappointing about this year," Brooks said. "We went into it with 'No Excuses' as our motto and along the way we lost four players to ACL injuries and ended up playing the last part of the season with only seven players.
"We played great the last two weeks of the season and I couldn't be any more proud of them. I've been coaching a long time but I don't know if I've ever been more proud of seven players on the same team than I am with these seven."
