STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Ashley James set a new career-high with 15 points, but the Belles could not overcome a fast start from the TexAnns as the Angelo State women's basketball team (7-7, 5-3 Lone Star Conference) fell on the road at Tarleton State, 77-63, in the Wisdom Gym Wednesday night.
The TexAnns (10-5, 7-0 LSC) began the game on a 20-2 run, including hitting five from three-point range in the first four minutes of the game.
The Belles were unable to recover, trailing by 20-plus points throughout the first and second half before ASU went on a 19-2 in the final six minutes of the game, but it was mostly in garbage time as TSU emptied its bench.
James was one of four Belles to score in double figures in the game going 6-of-11 from the field including three from behind the arc as she bested her previous high of 13 points. The three threes were also a personal best.
Haylee Oliver (12 points),
Paige Weishuhn (12 points) and
Cassi Stegall (10 points) joined James in double-digit scoring for the Belles. Oliver also had a team-leading nine rebounds and three assists for ASU. Reigning LSC Defensive Player of the Week
Lauren Holt had three blocks.
Angelo State saw its streak of holding opponents to 60 points or less come to an end as the TexAnns shot 47 percent from the field and .412 from downtown. The 77 points is the most that the Belles have given up this season.
Tarleton's Peyton Adamson had 23 points to lead the TexAnns. Adamson was 8-of-12 from the field, including 7-of-11 from three-point range. Shanae Lawrence added 15 points while Kiara Wright had 12 and nine rebounds for TSU.
The Belles and TexAnns will meet again on Feb. 22 in San Angelo.
ASU returns for its next game this Saturday as it hosts Texas A&M-Commerce at Stephens Arena at the Junell Center. The game is slated for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
