Tarleton State at Angelo State Gallery
SAN ANGELO – Angelo State's
Leah LeMaire made a last-second jumper to send the game into overtime, but Tarleton State outscored the Belles 14-4 in the extra session to claim a 71-61 Lone Star Conference win on Wednesday at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.
The Belles (4-4, 2-1 LSC) forced their second straight overtime after earning a double-overtime victory over West Texas A&M but were unable to finish off the comeback as the TexAnns (4-2, 1-0 LSC) scored the first 11 points of overtime. ASU is now 1-1 in overtime games this season and are 2-1 at home.
“We were out of sync the entire game and I am still trying to figure it out,” ASU head coach Sally Brooks said. “I feel like we were making poor decisions with and without the ball throughout the game. When we did score it was an individual making a play and it just wasn't a good team effort. We played flat.”
LeMaire led Angelo State with 18 points and added seven rebounds, while
Haylee Oliver paced the Belles with 11 rebounds and 13 points.
Cassi Stegall scored 10 points and
Morgan Youngblood tacked on eight. LeMaire, Youngblood and
Faith Hunt accounted for the Belles' three made 3-pointers and
Lauren Holt, Lemaire and Giselle Aguire each added two assists. Hunt finished the game with seven points and Holt added two blocks.
Angelo State outrebounded the TexAnns 40-39 in the game, but also committed 28 turnovers compared to TSU's 14. The Belles led the game 22-16 at the 8:09 mark of the game off an old-fashion three-point play by LeMaire but it was followed by TSU going on a 14-2 run and take a 30-24 halftime advantage.
ASU shot 54 percent from the floor in the first half and 46.2 percent throughout the game while Tarleton State shot 41 percent. Turnovers limited the Belles to 13 fewer shot attempts in the game. Karli Moore led TSU with 10 points and added four rebounds, while Kiara Wright contributed five rebounds and nine points.
The Belles return to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Texas A&M-Commerce to start a four-game road trip that will not end until they host Midwestern State on Jan. 5, 2013. ASU and A&M-Commerce split their season series last year with the home teams taking each game.
“We lost there last year and they are an improved team,” Brooks said. “They play good defense and will give us a test. If we play like we did tonight at Commerce we have a lot to be concerned about offensively.”
