SAN ANGELO, Texas – Ashley James scored seven straight points in the final minutes in the second half to force overtime where the Angelo State women's basketball team came out on top over Cameron, 54-53 on Wednesday night to remain undefeated in league play at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.
James hit a three-pointer with 2:01 remaining breaking a six minute drought for the Belles (11-8, 9-4 Lone Star Conference) without scoring a field-goal as ASU fell behind by seven to the Aggies (13-6, 9-5 LSC) prior to the basket.
James then followed through with a layup that brought the Belles within two at the 1:14 mark before hitting a jumper to tie the game at 46-46 with 30 seconds left to play in the second half.
“To be honest with you, I don't think anything was going through my mind, it was just clear,” said James, who finished with 10 points and three rebounds. “It was one of those moments that your heart takes over and says I can't lose this game, I can't lose this game.”
James had an opportunity to win the game with 1.1 seconds left to play in the second half after catching a perfect full-court pass from
Morgan Youngblood, but the shot hit the back rim as the Belles and Aggies headed for overtime.
The two schools went back and forth in the extra period with ASU falling behind by as much as four before rallying to take the lead thanks to five points from
Leah LeMaire and a three-pointer by
Haylee Oliver with 1:14 left to play that gave the Belles the lead for good, 54-52.
The Aggies had three chances in the final minute to either tie the game or take the lead, but the Belles' defense, ranked second only to Cameron in the LSC in many defensive categories, held strong including on a final shot at the buzzer by CU's Nicole Pendarvis that went long.
LeMaire had a career-high 15 points besting her previous total of 14 she scored earlier this season. The sophomore guard also had four rebounds. Oliver added 13 off the bench and had a team-leading seven rebounds.
The Belles won their sixth straight game at home and remain a perfect 6-0 at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center during conference play as they avenged a 56-50 loss to the Aggies earlier this season in Lawton.
Sabelle Diata and Julie Paunovic had 14 points each to pace the Aggies. Diata also had 13 rebounds and three blocks to her stat line.
The win moves the Belles in a tie for third with West Texas A&M in the LSC standings, while Cameron drops to fourth. ASU will host the Lady Buffs later this year.
Angelo State returns to the court on Saturday as it travels to Midwestern State to face the Mustangs with tip-off slated to begin at 5 p.m. The Belles defeated MSU, 64-58, on Dec. 12 in San Angelo.
