WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Paige Weishuhn had 18 second-half points to help the Angelo State women's basketball team nearly overcame a 13-point second half deficit, but Midwestern State countered with two 20-point scorers and going 23-of-25 from the free throw line as the Belles fall to the Mustangs, 83-70, Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Weishuhn finished the game with 21 points to earn her third 20-point effort of the season. The senior from Wall also added a couple of blocks, but Angelo State (11-9, 9-5 Lone Star Conference) continued its struggles on the road, falling to 4-6 overall this season including 3-6 during league play.

Kristi Degelia (24 points) and Savannah Carver (20 points) were the top guns for Midwestern State (16-4, 12-2 LSC) as it improves to 7-0 at home on the year. The Mustangs also got 12 points and a team-leading nine rebounds from Jazman Patterson.

Ashley James had a double-double for ASU with 11 points and a career-high 11 assists. It was the first time a Belles had double-digit assists since Asheia Haynes' 12 on March 3, 2006 versus Texas Woman's. Morgan Youngblood also had 11 points while Lauren Holt added a game-high 10 rebounds.

ASU jumped out to a 14-7 start to begin the game, but Midwestern State stayed within reach thanks to the Belles getting in foul trouble early forcing MSU to the charity stripe. The Mustangs capitalize by going 17-of-18 from the free-throw line in the first half and had a 39-28 lead over the Belles going into the locker rooms at the half.

Midwestern State pushed its lead to 13 at the 19:13 mark after the start of the second half and stayed above double-digits before Weishuhn and the Belles fought back.

Weishuhn had 13 points in a stretch where the Belles trimmed away at the Mustangs' lead as the 6-foot-1 center put the team on her back.

The Belles twice cut the deficit down to two, but could take control on both occasions. After Holt made a layup that made the score 60-58 with 8:42 remaining, the Mustangs went on a 15-2 run pushing the game out of reach for Angelo State.

The loss drops the Belles out of third place in the conference down to fifth while the Mustangs stay locked in at second place trailing Tarleton State.

Angelo State returns to the court as it hosts two games next week, on Wednesday, Feb. 8 versus Eastern New Mexico at 5:30 p.m. then again next Saturday, Feb. 11 versus West Texas A&M.
