SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State women's team had four players score in double figures, but could not overcome a poor shooting performance as the Belles lost at home for the first time in 2012, 63-58, to Eastern New Mexico on Wednesday. The Belles had won their previous six games at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.
Haylee Oliver had 15 points and tied the team-lead in rebounds with six as the Belles (11-10, 9-6 Lone Star Conference) tried to remain undefeated at home during league play, but the Zias' (8-13, 6-9 LSC) tandem of Precious Herrin and Kiara Tate was too much for Angelo State down the stretch.
Oliver shot 5-of-11 from the field and was joined in double-digit scoring by
Lauren Holt (12 points),
Leah LeMaire (11 points) and
Morgan Youngblood (11 points). Youngblood tied Oliver with the rebounding honors with six and also had three assists.
ASU however shot less than 36 percent from the field including going only 2-of-16 from three-point range. The Zias, in comparison, shot over 50 percent from the field as they avenged an earlier season loss to the Belles in which they scored a season-low 31 points at home.
Angelo State trailed at the half, 31-27, but tied the game twice in the second half, including at the 3:27 mark with the game knotted at 50-50.
A jumper by Oliver would give the Belles their first lead of the game at 52-50 with 2:34 left to play, but ASU would lose it on the other end as Herrin answered with a jumper of her own that tied it again at 52-52.
The Zias' Tori Northcutt hit a three with 1:34 left in the game to break the tie and give ENMU a 55-52 advantage followed by a Tate layup after the Belles failed to score on the offensive end.
The Belles had an opportunity to tie the game as Eastern New Mexico held a three-point lead, 59-56, with just 21 seconds remaining after a missed Tate free throw, but ASU failed to obtain the defensive rebound and the Zias were able to convert the rest of their free throws to seal the game.
Herrin had 18 points for Eastern New Mexico followed by Tate's 17 as they contributed to a 38-17 bench-point advantage.
The Belles return to Stephens Arena on Saturday to face West Texas A&M at 5:30 p.m.
