Sally Walling Brooks has been a head basketball coach for 22 years with 13 at the helm of Angelo State. The Belles all-time winningest coach has 398 career victories is on the verge of hitting 400 victories but the wins are in small comparisons to the program she has built.
After taking the Angelo State position in 2000, the view of Belle basketball changed drastically. Prior to Walling Brooks taking over the Belles were 34-121 in their previous six seasons and had only won the Lone Star Conference crown once and reached the NCAA Tournament in 1994.
In her first season she led the Belles to a 20-8 record and a share of the LSC South Division title.
The wins and accolades for the program continued from that point. In 13 season Walling Brooks has seen 10 winnings seasons, three LSC Tournament Championships, four LSC South Division titles and seven consecutive trips to the NCAA Division II National Tournament. She has twice been named the LSC Coach of the Year and her players have earned 33 all-conference selections.
“It is amazing to be a part of that,” Kelli Anne Goble, former Belle guard from 2001-04 said. “Coach Brooks has been an instrumental part of the Belle program and she has brought a lot and it is great to see that tradition keep building and it is great to be a piece of her 400 wins.”
Her 2004-05 team won the most games in a single season with 28. She has had eight seasons of at least 20 wins while at ASU. Natalija Tsurbakova and Kylie Nabors both were named All-Americans during their career at ASU. Tsurbakova was also picked to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American team.
“It is definitely very exciting,” Sharon Ballenger Beam, current San Angelo Lakeview girl's basketball coach and former Belles player from 2002-05 said. “Sally is a very good coach. I have learned a lot from her and I use a lot of things that she taught me from playing for her and now being able to talk to her now. It shows you she is a coach that knows how to win.”
Prior to her 12 years and Angelo State, Brooks compiled a record of 155-106 at Incarnate Word. She had two 20-win seasons including setting the record for wins in a season with 25 at UIW.
She will be one of 21 current Division II coaches to reach the 400 win milestone and the 47
th all-time in Division II to hit the mark.
“Four hundred victories is a great accomplishment that not many coaches can get to in a career,” Lauren Weishuhn, former Belle from 2007-11 said. “She has been here a long time so she means a lot to the program.”
The program has developed a winning tradition but the winning tradition has branched out to other courts. Not only is assistant coach Stacy Duffell a former player of Walling Brooks but she is also among the numerous players and former Belle players who are currently basketball coaches in various communities. The list of former Belles include Beam, Goble (Northwest ISD), Kami Williamson (Mernard), Alix Flores (Kopperl), Kylie Nabors (Judson), Lyndsey Leatherman Schaertl (Coahoma), Ashley King Hines (Gainsville), Meghan LeJuene (Iota, Lousiana), Britinee Davis, Camille Perkins (ASU graduate assistant).
“I am extremely happy for Coach Brooks she deserves every bit of it,” Williamson, former Belle from 2000-03 said. “I am proud to be a part of the tradition and the Belle program.”
