SAN ANGELO, Texas –
Hillari Adam scored a career high 24 points leading Angelo State to a 72-44 victory over McMurry on Friday night in the St. Mary's Classic in San Antonio.
"I thought we had an overall great team effort tonight," ASU head coach
Cayla Petree said after the game. "We always talk about 'doing your job' and I think the girls are really buying into that concept. We had a balanced scoring attack with four players in double figures. it was a good win against a well coach and disciplined team."
The Belles (1-0) and McMurry (0-1) exchanged leads five different times through the first 15 minutes of play. A quick 5-0 start by the Warhawks would be answered with Adam scoring five-straight points. Adam would finish the half with 14 points on her way to her game high 24.
After a layup by
Rochelle Norris and Adam would tie the game at 21, the Belles would hold McMurry scoreless over the last 6:07 of the first half.
Haylee Oliver hit a three pointer to start the 10-0 run while Norris scored two and Adam scored five of the points including a three pointer to close the half.
McMurry wouldn't go away in the second half. The Warhawks would start the half on a 13-5 run to trim the score to 36-34. A three by
Amanda Weaver extended the lead 39-34 but McMurry would cut it to 41-40 with 11:48 to go in the game.
The Belles responded with two free throws by
Karli Kellermeier and would go on a 31-4 run over the last 11:48 to Petree's first win as head coach at ASU.
Nine Belles scored on the night with Kellermeier, Norris and
Kayla Turner each scoring 10 points. Kellermeier also added eight rebounds, five steals and two assists. Adam grabbed seven rebounds to go with her 24 points.
Angelo State outrebounded McMurry 38-27 with 14 being on the offensive end. ASU scored 27 points off 21 McMurry turnovers.
The Belles return to action tomorrow night at the St. Mary's Classic against tournament host St. Mary's at 6 p.m.
