Belles Fall to St. Mary’s 51-40

SAN ANGELO
– The Angelo State women's basketball team lost 51-40 to St. Mary's in the final game of the St. Mary's Classic on Saturday night in San Antonio.

The Belles (1-1) were able to hold St. Mary's (2-0) to 33-percent shooting but struggled on the floor only shooting 24.5-percent on the night.

"Overall, I am really disappointed with our effort tonight," head coach Cayla Petree said after the game. "There are a lot of things we can't control in basketball games but how hard we play is not one. We are capable of much more than we showed tonight. All we can do is move forward and continue to improve."

St. Mary's jumped out to a fast start scoring the game's first eight points before a Haylee Oliver jumper put ASU on the board.

The Belles would continue the uphill battle but struggled hitting only four-of-27 shots (14.8-percent) from the floor. ASU did score 14 of its points off 11 Rattler turnovers.

The Rattlers up 27-12 last in the first half but free throws by Karli Kellermeier and Leah LeMaire along with a three pointer by Weaver closed the deficit to 27-19 at halftime.

ASU shot better in the second half and would cut the lead to three coming out of the half. A Rochelle Norris free throw cut it to 29-26 at the 14:27 mark of the second half.

St. Mary's would respond with an 11-3 run to extend their lead to 40-29. ASU did outscored St. Mary's 11-9 over the final nine minutes of the game.

Three Rattlers player scored in double figures with Jackie Woods leading the way with 14 points. Amanda Weaver led ASU with a career high 10 points.

The Rattlers held a sizeable rebounding margin at 53-35 and scored 30 points in the pain compared to 16 for the Belles.

The Belles will play their first home game of the season on Tuesday at Stephens Arena inside the Junell Center against Arlington Baptist at 6 p.m.
