SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Angelo State women's basketball team lost 59-52 to Western New Mexico snapping a three-game win streak on Wednesday night.
The Belles (5-4) had a better shooting percentage from the field (39.6-percent to 38.3-percent) and three pointers (44.4-percent to 29.6-percent) but the Lady Mustangs (3-2) forced 15 turnovers. Western New Mexico was able to outscore the Belles in points off turnovers (11-2) and points in the paint (26-16).
"Western New Mexico is a very well coached and disciplined team," head coach
Cayla Petree said after the game. "They showed a tremendous amount of fight and I give them credit. We have to work on limiting our mental mistakes moving forward. Four games over six days drained us and it showed in the second half. We have made some great strides and we have to continue to improve."
Hillari Adam led the Belles with 14 points.
Leah LeMaire added nine points and grabbed eight rebounds on the night.
Karli Kellermeier recorded nine rebounds and chipped in seven points.
Three Lady Mustangs scored in double figures with RaTanya Newsome leading Western New Mexico with 17 points.
Both teams struggled from the field to start the game. A three pointer by
Michelle Rosewell tied the game at eight at the 12:28 mark of the first half.
Amanda Weaver gave the Belles their first lead on a free throw and sparked an 8-2 run. Adam drained a three with Kellermier and LeMaire adding layups to put the Belles up 18-12 with 6:20 to play in the half.
The Lady Mustangs took a 20-19 lead on a three pointer by Ashley Mitchell but Rosewell's second three pointer of the night pushed ASU ahead 22-20 with 1:49 on the clock. Western New Mexico responded by scoring the final eight points of the half to make it 28-22 at the break.
Kellermeier scored a layup to cut the deficit 28-24 to open the second half. The Lady Mustangs went on an 8-0 to extend their lead to 35-24.
The Belles fall behind as much as 12 before finding a spark. Adam would hit a three off an assist from Weaver to start a 9-1 run. Adam would score eight of the nine points during the run to make the score 45-41 at the 8:14 mark of the second half.
WNMU's Newsome hit a three on the next possession to go up 48-41 and the Lady Mustangs would hit three of four free throws in the final minute to secure the win.
The Belles will have a break before returning to the court on Tues., Dec. 17 against Schreiner.Â
