WICHITA FALLS –
Haylee Oliver had 17 points and four blocked shots to help lead the Angelo State women's basketball team to a 54-48 Lone Star Conference win over Midwestern State on Saturday at the D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The Belles (11-12, 8-9 LSC) secured their spot in the Lone Star Conference tournament with the win and earned their first road victory since topping Texas A&M International on Dec. 18. The Mustangs (18-5, 13-4 LSC) fall to 10-2 on their home court this season and split their season series with ASU.
“We've always believed that we can beat any team and this shows that we were right,” Oliver said. “We weren't supposed to win this game. We were the underdog and snuck in and won one on the road.”
Lauren Holt recorded a double-double in the win with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while
Karli Kellermeier added nine points and seven rebounds. ASU opened the game on a 7-0 run and held off a late two-minute charge by the Mustangs for the confidence-building victory. ASU led 26-17 at halftime after shooting 52.3 percent from the floor, including hitting three 3-pointers.
“We aren't playing for the regular-season conference championship, but we are playing to get better for when we are in the conference tournament,” ASU head coach Sally Brooks said. “We believe we can win that tournament. It was crazy for us to say that during our losing streak, but we know we are capable of doing that. We are capable of more than this.”
Morgan Youngblood added six points and six rebounds for the Belles who made 17 free throws and overcame 21 turnovers.
Angelo State finished the game shooting 41.5 percent from the floor and limited MSU to 25 percent. The Mustangs made 6 of their 24 shots in the first half and 8 of their 32 in the second half. Oliver had two blocks down the stretch on MSU 3-point attempts and the Mustangs finished the game with only three 3-pointers on 11 attempts.
“I thought they missed shots because we played good defense,” Brooks said. “We gave up very few points in transition and limited their second opportunities. I thought it was a great effort from beginning to end.”
Angelo State returns to action at 2 p.m. next Saturday against Texas Woman's in Denton.
