SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team cut a 14-point second half deficit to two but was unable to complete the comeback falling to Midwestern State, 67-63, on Wednesday.
The Belles (9-8, 3-4 LSC) shot 40.8-percent from the field for the game and hit eight three's on the night. The Mustangs (11-7, 3-4 LSC) hit 41.1-percent from the field. MSU forced 19 ASU turnovers and scored 24 points in the paint.
Both teams had hot starts in the first half. The Belles hit 46.2-percent from the field and 50-percent from behind the arc while the Mustangs made 55.6-percent from the field. Midwestern State had a 10-2 early in the first half to take a 12-4 lead before
Hillari Adam hit a jumper. Â
Midwestern State built a 26-18 lead with 7:42 to go in the first half.
Rochelle Norris hit back-to-back jumpers and Adam sank a three to spark a 7-0 run over the next two minutes to cut the deficit to 28-25. The Mustangs would outscore the Rambelles 11-6 over the final 2:22 to take a 39-31 halftime advantage.
The Mustangs came out in the second half and built a 48-37 lead on a 9-4 run and would lead by as much as 14 at 53-39 with 12:22 to go in the game. The Belles started chipping away after Tati Haynes hit a three pointer.
Amanda Weaver sank a three to cap off a 10-2 run that cut the MSU lead to 55-49 with 9:43 left.
Just moments later
Haylee Oliver, Norris and Haynes all sunk free throws to bring the Belles to within two at 63-61. The Mustangs would four free throws in the final 1:50 to secure the 67-63 victory.
Three Belles scored in double figures with Weaver leading the way with 16 points. Adam poured in 13 points with Haynes adding 10. Norris grabbed a team high nine rebounds and scored nine points.
Andrea Carter led the Mustangs with a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds. Kirsti Degelia put in 13 for MSU.
The Belles will head to Lawton, Okla., to face Cameron on Saturday at 2 p.m. Â
