Belles Face No. 11 West Texas A&M in Canyon

SAN ANGELO –The Angelo State women's basketball team will travel to face No. 11/14 West Texas A&M in a Lone Star Conference game on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in Canyon at First United Bank Center.

The Belles (5-8, 0-3 LSC) will look to snap a three-game losing streak after dropping their first three LSC games to Tarleton State, Texas Woman's and Texas A&M-Commerce. ASU has been able to shoot better than opponents from the field (40.0-percent to 37.4-percent) and 3-point line (35.1-percent to 27.4-percent) this season while holding teams to just 37.4-percent from the field which is No. 2 in the LSC. The Belles have the top 3-point percentage defense in the LSC as opponents are only making 27.4-percent.

ASU excelled from the 3-point line making a total of 19 over the last three games including a season high of 11 against Texas A&M-Commerce. ASU is currently No. 3 in the LSC in 3-point field goal percentage at 35.1-percent. The Belles will try to limit turnovers after committing at least 20 in the last three games. The Belles have out rebounded teams 41.3 to 39.1 this season and are 5-3 in games when out rebounding opponents. The Belles have dished out 13.1 assists per game and average 3.4 blocks per game but opponents have forced 18.3 turnovers per game.

West Texas A&M is 10-2 on the season and 1-1 in the LSC with their only two losses coming to UT-Permian Basin and No. 20 Midwestern State. The Lady Buffs were national runner-ups last season and are ranked No. 11 in the USA Today Coaches Poll and No. 14 in the Women's Basketball Media Poll sponsored by D2SIDA. Three Lady Buffs score in double figures led by Chontiquah White's 17.5 points per game. Sasha Watson is second on the team at 13.4 points per game while Michaela Neuhaus is third with 10.6 per game. WT leads the league in scoring at 77.3 points per game and leads the LSC in shooting at 48.2-percent. The Lady Buffs also lead the league in steals (11.83) and assists (16.75). 

The Lady Buffs hold a 49-18 overall series lead on the Belles and have won 20 of the last 21 contests. The last win in Canyon for ASU was in February of 2005. The Belles are 4-19 in Canyon since 1995.

The Belles had some stand out performances over the last week from their two leading scorers. Amanda Weaver had the best game of her career against Texas A&M-Commerce. The junior scored a career-high 25 points and made six 3-pointers. The Center Point native leads the LSC in 3-point percentage made and is No. 9 in NCAA Division II with a clip of .485. Weaver is averaging 11.2 points per game and leads the Belles with 30 assists. Jasmine Caston, who leads ASU with a 14.6 scoring average, scored 23 points against Texas Woman's all in the second half. It was her third game scoring at least 20 points and 10th in double figures.

KeAnna Kelly had a breakout performance against Texas A&M-Commerce as well. The freshman scored a career-high 15 points and dished out three assists. The Mansfield native is averaging 3.3 points per game while appearing in 10 games.

Shauna Coleman is third on the team in scoring with 7.0 points per game and grabs a team-high 5.3 rebounds. The freshman had her first career double-double against Arlington Baptist with career highs in both points (16) and rebounds (11).

The Belles two newcomers, Leila Jdily-Ezzad and Minja Savic, have seen action in all three games since transferring. Jdily-Ezzad has averaged 19.0 minutes per game and scored 3.7 points per game. She scored a season-high 10 points against
Texas Woman's. Savic is playing in 11.7 minutes per game while averaging 2.7 points per game. The Serbian native had a standout game against Tarleton State with six points and seven rebounds.

Michelle Rosewell, who has started 11 games for the Belles, is second on the team with 26 assists. The senior is scoring 1.9 points per game and has 14 steals.

Elaine Herrera, Keva Raiford, Kietta Saunders and Shanna Taylor have all seen action off the bench in the last week. Herrera has recorded 21 assists on the season while Raiford grabbed 13 rebounds this season. Saunders, who made start against UT-Permian Basin, has dished out 10 assists and made four steals on the season.

The game will be carried locally on 1260AM KKSA with Jeremy Bryant on the call.
