SAN ANGELO – The No. 3 Angelo State women's soccer team will host Texas Woman's on Friday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. and Texas A&M-Commerce on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. at the ASU Soccer Field with a chance to clinch a Lone Star Conference Championship in one of two of its final two home matches of the regular season.
The Belles are 13-1-1 on the year and 7-1 in the conference with 21 points. Angelo State welcomes TWU (9-5-2, 4-3-1 LSC) and Texas A&M-Commerce (9-5-2, 5-1-2 LSC) and has won seven consecutive matches which broke the school record for consecutive wins. If ASU wins one match this weekend or Texas A&M-Commerce loses a match, the Belles will clinch their second Lone Star Conference Championships. The Belles have one previous LSC title that was shared with Midwestern State in 2013.
"I think our team has progressed quite well," ASU head soccer coach Travis McCorkle said. "What we are hoping is that we are still working on playing our best soccer and that's an important thing. We want to continue to improve and the last two weeks have demonstrated that we still have more to work on and more to improve. I am pleased where we are at right now."
ASU is 5-0 at home this season and is 14-0-1 in the last two seasons at the ASU Soccer Field. The Belles have only allowed two goals this season at home.
"It has been difficult playing on the road as much as we have and the team has really come to appreciate the home crowd," McCorkle said. "I think it's special when you have a loud crowd and they are boisterous and encouraging you. It's something that is neat for the girls right now."
All seven wins have been shutouts which ties the school record for consecutive shutouts. Opponents have been held scoreless for the last 707 minutes against the Belles. Shantel Wittke, the two time LSC Defensive Player of the Week, has been instrumental in the net. The senior has nine shutouts this season and with the win against Midwestern State last weekend became ASU's all-time career leader with 25 wins. The Tucson native has recorded 19 career shutouts and with two more would tie the ASU career record held by Lisa Carey. She is 10-1-1 overall this season and ranked No. 5 nationally in goals against average (.307) and save percentage (.934). Wittke has been aided in the back end by Ashley Exford, Selena Alvarez, Shay Williams, Molly Warren and Callie Smith. The defense has held teams to just six goals this season. ASU is No. 8 in goals-against average nationally with a .391 percentage and No. 2 nationally in save percentage with a clip of .912.
"Any good defense at this time of year that gets that many shutouts is going to have some moments with close calls and some bending in the back, but we haven't broken," McCorkle said. "I think that it's a testament to the back six players that we have that can play there and our goal keeping. We push each other hard in training to be the best players we can be and I think that our defense has done a great job in exemplifying that so far."
The Belles have had a balance scoring attack with 10 players scoring at least one goal on the season. Haley Mendel leads the team with nine goals on the season followed by Sierra Anderson's eight goals. Anderson has 32 career goals and is two behind tying Brandi DeBacker for second on the ASU career list. The offense has scored an LSC high of 35 goals on the season and average 15.4 shots per game.
Demi Tsambasis (6), Tiffany Dang (4) Selena Alvarez (2), and Payton Shlemon (2) all have multiple goals this season while Kathleen Keoughan, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Lauren Perry and Loni Byers have each added a goal.
TWU enters the match with a 9-5-2 record and 4-3-1 in the LSC. The Belles defeated Texas Woman's 2-0 with goals coming from Mendel and Anderson. The win was the first of seven in the current seven match win streak.
Texas A&M-Commerce enters the match as the only team to beat the Belles this season. The Lions won 1-0 in the LSC opener. It is the only goal ASU has given up in conference play this season.
The Belles will honor seniors Alvarez, Anderson, Natalie Nielsen and Wittke prior to the start of Sunday's match against Texas A&M-Commerce for Senior Day. Alvarez has played in 75 career matches as a Belle and is three away from tying Brandie DeBakcer and Megan Schaffer for the all-time record for matches played.Â
"The senior class has been a huge part of the transformation of the culture of the program," McCorkle said. "I said when I first came back in 2008 we wanted to kind of modify the culture of the program. Believing that we could win and believing that playing hard for each other and not just thinking about themselves or individuals would be a positive thing. This class has been a huge part of that transformation. They are a very team oriented group and they do so much together, and they enjoy doing it. It's not like we mandate that they have to partake in all these things together, they make their own things to do together because they do truly enjoy each other. They are best friends."
