SAN ANGELO – The No. 4 ranked Angelo State women's soccer team will wait on the winner of West Texas A&M and Midwestern State at the ASU Soccer Field in the semifinals of the LSC Soccer Tournament Championship on Friday, Nov. 6 at 7:30 p.m.
The Belles (14-2-1) are making their 13th appearance in the LSC Tournament Championship. ASU has made one appearance in the Tournament Championship final and that was last season. This marks the second time Angelo State has hosted the conference tournament the first was in 2013.
"I think my team has done well and that they are starting to take another step forward with how they are playing," ASU head soccer coach Travis McCorkle said. "I especially felt like that when we played at West Texas A&M and I believe that it continued through the next week with Midwestern State. They are playing very well. The loss on Sunday was unfortunate but the progress and amount of quality opportunities that we are creating are things that you want that will get you wins."
ASU enter the tournament after recording the best regular season record in school history. The Belles scored 37 goals while limiting teams to just eight goals on the season. The eight goals placed ASU on pace to break the fewest goals allowed of 14 allowed last year. Angelo State is No. 7 in Division II in save percentage (.896) and No. 12 in goals-against average (.457).
Shantel Wittke, who was recognized as the LSC Goalkeeper of the Year, has excelled this season with an 11-2-1 record on the season. She broke the ASU career record with 26 through three seasons. She is No. 7 nationally in goals against average (.394) and No. 3 in save percentage (.914). The Tucson native has only allowed six goals on the season and has 10 shutouts on the year.
LSC Defensive Player of the Year, Ashley Exford and All-LSC second team member Shay Williams have been integral parts of a defense that has shutout 11 opponents on the year. Molly Warren, who provided the game-winning goal against TWU to clinch the LSC Championship and Callie Smith have been a part of a backline that has only allowed eight goals on the year.
Haley Mendel, the LSC Offensive Player of the Year, has led a group of 11 that have scored a goal this season. The junior leads the team with 10 goals of which four were game-winners. She has added three assists and was a first team All-LSC selection. Sierra Anderson, a second team All-LSC selection, has scored eight goals and dished out five assists. She leads the LSC in shots (63) and shots on goal (36).
Demi Tsambasis has scored six goals in her first season at ASU and was honored with the LSC Newcomer of the Year honors. The junior has taken 23 shots with 10 being on goal. Tiffany Dang picked up second team All-LSC honors with four goals and four assists.
Payton Shlemon, Selena Alvarez, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Loni Byers, Molly Warren, Kathleen Keoughan, a second team All-LSC selection, and Lauren Perry have all scored a goal for ASU this season.
"I have been really pleased with where we are at and with our substitutes being able to come in and contribute just as much as everyone else and they have done a fantastic job," McCorkle said. "I am just really please with where the team is at right now."
The Belles are a combined 4-0 against West Texas A&M and Eastern New Mexico. ASU defeated WT 2-0 and ENMU 1-0 in both matches. Wittke and the ASU defense did not allow a goal in the 360 minutes against either opponent.
Mendel and Anderson scored in the first match against WT with Mende's being the only penalty kick ASU has taken this season. The second match had Shlemon scoring her first goa of her career that she tapped over the keepers head. Â Anderson and Mendel provided the difference makers against ENMU.
Tickets for the tournament will be $10 for adults and $7 for youth and students per day. Angelo State students and students from participating universities will receive free admission with a university ID.Â
