SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team returns to Stephens Arena at the Junell Center for a matchup with Texas Wesleyan on Wednesday, Dec. 2 at 5:30 p.m.
The Belles (3-1) are 2-0 at home this season and are averaging 87.5 points which is the sixth highest point total in the nation. Angelo State started the season scoring at least 80 points in three straight games which is the first time that has happened since the 2007-2008 season. The offense has been aided by ball movement and dishing 19.5 assists per game which is No. 12 nationally and No. 1 in the LSC. The defense is limiting teams to 68.2 points per game and outrebounding teams 42.8 to 35.8. A 4-1 start would equal the best start since the 2010-2011 season.Â
The offense has been aided by the LSC's top scorer Taylor Dorsey. The junior is averaging 18.3 points per game and is the only LSC player over 13.0 points per game. She has scored at least 18 points in three of ASU's four games including a season high 27 in the season opener versus Arlington Baptist. She has recorded 11 assists, five steals and 25 rebounds. Her 6.5 rebounds per game is second on the team.
Jasmine Prophet is second on the team in scoring with 11.8 points per game. The junior has aided the defense with six blocks and four steals. She has two games scoring in double figures (16, 18). The Jackson Mississippi, native grabbed a season high six rebounds in the win over Western New Mexico. She is tops on the team in field goal percentage at .576.
Brea Mitchell has scored at least eight points in every game this season and averages 10.3 per game. She has scored a season high 12 points twice and has one double-double on the year. She leads the team in rebounds with a 6.5 average and 17 assists. The senior is also tops in the LSC in field goal percentage hitting 12-of-12.
Diamalises Rivera is fourth on the team in scoring with 10.0 points per game coming off the bench. She scored double figures in the first three games of the season. She has recorded 5.3 rebounds per game and has handed our five assists. The Puerto Rican native has also contributed two blocks and four steals on the season.
Christina Robinson has found her shooting touch. The junior guard is hitting 61.5-percent from the 3-point line and is No. 5 nationally. She is averaging 9.8 points per game and hit a season high 16 points against Missouri S&T.
KeAnna Kelly scored a season high 16 points in the win over Missouri S&T and averages 9.5 points per game. She is making .419 from the floor and sunk seven 3-pointers. She is one of four Belles with double-digit assists (10) and is tops on the team with 10 steals.
A group of four has seen significant time off the bench for the Belles. Natalie Quensel is averaging 13.8 minutes per game and scores 4.5 per game. She scored a career high eight points versus Arkansas Monticello. Nekeita Bailey has recorded six steals and four assists in 12.8 minutes per game. Kiahna Thompson and Lou Hawkins have both appeared in four games this season. Thompson averaged 3.3 points and 1.3 rebounds including a season high 10 points in the season opener. Hawkins hit a season high six points against Arlington Baptist.
Texas Wesleyan enters the matchup with a 3-3 record. The Lady Rams have faced three other LSC teams in Tarleton State, Midwestern State, Texas Woman's and lost all three games. Katelynn Threats is the team's leading scorer at 19.3 points per game and averages 11.3 rebounds per game as well. This will be the third time these two programs have faced each other. The series is tied at one with ASU winning in 1998 and Texas Wesleyan in 1999.Â
