SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team will host No. 7 West Texas A&M on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The game has been declared a White Out for Cancer with all fans encouraged to wear white.
The Belles (7-12, 1-7 LSC) won their first Lone Star Conference game of the season with a 58-45 defeat of Texas A&M-Kingsville. ASU is looking for its first win at the Junell Center since Dec. 16, 2014. The Belles are 3-5 and have dropped its last three at home. The win snapped a seven game losing streak and it was the first win of 2015 for Angelo State.
ASU hit 11-of-19 (57.9-percent) in the second half to complete a comeback against Texas A&M-Kingsville after behind down 24-16 at halftime. The Belles blocked a season-high seven shots with two coming from
Shauna Coleman and
KeAnna Kelly.
The team is led by
Amanda Weaver's 10.5 points per game this season but has scored 11.8 against conference opponents. The junior is hitting .392 from the 3-point line and has made 40 on the year. She leads the Belles with 46 assists and is second with 12 steals. The Center Point native has had 11 double-digit scoring games and two games of at least 20 points.
Diamalises Rivera has turned into a consistent scoring threat for the Belles. The junior has started 13 games this season and is averaging 7.4 points per game. She is averaging 11.4 points per game in conference with her two best performances coming in the last two games with 23 and 18 points. It was her third and fourth double-digit scoring games of the season. The Carolina, Puerto Rico native is tops on the team in field goal percentage at 52.5-percent and has gotten to the free throw line 53 times this season.
Shauna Coleman has adjusted to the college game as a freshman. She has scored in double figures in the last three games and is scoring 7.8 points per game this season. It is the second time this season that Coleman has scored in double figures in three-straight games. She grabs 5.5 rebounds per game and is second on the team with eight blocks. Her 16 steals is second on the team.
Leila Jdily-Ezzad is averaging 5.5 points per game and has dished out 18 assists. She has started in two games and is playing 22.3 points per game. The Montpellier, France native has hit a clip of .400 from the field and is 17-of-24 from the free throw line.
Freshman
KeAnna Kelly has seen her role increase as she has started the last five games. She has averaged 6.2 points per game in her starts and is scoring 4.3 points per game this season. Her 11 points against Texas A&M-Kingsville was the second double-digit scoring game of the season.
Michelle Rosewell continues to lead the team in steals with 20 and is second on the team with 35 assists. She has recorded 18 assists in conference play which is tops on the team. She has scored 3.4 points per game during conference including a career-high 13 points against Midwestern State.
Kietta Saunders,
Keva Raiford,
Minja Savic and
Elaine Herrera have provided depth on the bench. Saunders is scoring 1.3 points per game this season. Her best game coming against West Texas A&M where she scored seven points. Â Raiford recorded five points, three rebounds and five assists in the win over Texas A&M-Kingsville. Herrera has scored 1.9 points per game this season and is a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line. Savic has played 7.0 minutes per game while scoring 1.5 points per game.
The Belles were held to a season-low 49 points in the first meeting with West Texas A&M. ASU were only down seven after the first half after shooting 32.1-percnet but struggled in the second half hitting only 25-percent from the field.
West Texas A&M is winners of their last seven games and sit at 16-2 overall. The Lady Buffs are leading the LSC with a 7-1 record with the only loss being to Midwestern State in Wichita Falls. WT leads the nation in field-goal percentage at 49.4-percent and is No. 6 nationally scoring offense at 80.5 points per game.
The LSC Preseason Player of the Year, Chontiquah White, leads the LSC and WT with 17.0 points per game. Sasha Watson is second on the team with a 13.2 scoring average. The Lady Buffs lead the all-time series 50-18 and have won 21 of the last 22 matchups. The last Belles victory over WT came on Dec. 1, 2012 in San Angelo.
