SAN ANGELO - The No. 4/7 Angelo State women's basketball team will hit the road again for its next two days, traveling to Las Vegas, Nevada for a pair of games in the Holiday Hoops Classic.
The Belles (7-0, 3-0 LSC) are one of only 12 undefeated Division II women's basketball teams left this season and will take on Western Washington at 3 p.m. CST on Saturday before facing Northwest Nazarene at 5:30 CST on Monday. Saturday's game will be played at South Point Resort while Monday's game was moved to the Doolittle Community Center.Â
ASU is currently outscoring its opponents at a torrid pace, ranking No. 14 in the nation in scoring offense and allowing just 57.4 points per game for an average scoring margin of 24.1, which ranks No. 10 in the nation.
Leading the Belles' offensively is seniors Taylor Dorsey and Jasmine Prophet, who are both averaging double-digit scoring performances so far this season. Dorsey is the team leader in scoring , averaging 21.7 points per game to rank No. 9 in the nation. The Ft. Worth native is the team's assist leader with 3.4 per game and has chipped in defensively as well with 3.14 steals per game. Prophet has also helped out defensively, blocking a conference second 1.33 shots per game. On offense, Prophet is averaging 11.5 points per game and the senior has grabbed a team-leading 42 boards as well.
"Taylor is just a fierce competitor," Angelo State head women's basketball coach said. "She's taken it upon herself this season to lead the team, score the basketball and just be the glue that holds us together. As a coach you love to see that, and she has really helped us so far this year."
Lexi Murphy has also put up big numbers for the Belles so far this season, shooting a team-leading 41 percent from behind the arc and averaging 9.5 points per game. The Nebraska native has also put up consistent rebound numbers placing second on the team with 5.3 per game.
After the starters get taken out, however the Belles don't miss a beat thanks to strong performances from Madi Greenwood and Chenelle Pelle. Greenwood is averaging the most minutes of any non-starter for Angelo State, and is scoring an average of 7.3 points per game during her time on the court. Pelle, however, is the Belles' leading scorer off the bench with 8.8 points per game, and has grabbed a team-third 5.0 rebounds per game as well.
Keanna Kelly, Christina Robinson and Bria Frierson are also all averaging more than six points per game this season. Kelly is the team's minutes leader as well, averaging 29.3 per game, while Robinson added in her second highest scoring performance of the season against Texas Woman's with 10 points.
Western Washington will come into the matchup with a 6-2 overall record and a 1-1 showing in Great Northwest Conference play. The Vikings are led by Taylor Peacocke, who averages 23.9 points per game which ranks No. 2 in the nation.
The Belles' second opponent, Northwest Nazarene, comes into the matchup with two losses as well, but has gone 2-0 since the start of conference play. The Crusaders have three players averaging in double figures so far this season, including team-leader Kate Cryderman who scores 12 points per game.
"Both of those teams that we're going to play in Las Vegas are very good," Baker said. "I'm glad that they're good because we need to be pushed to improve. Players start thinking about Christmas break this time of year, but we're going to make sure they don't check out quite yet and finish the semester strong with this tournament."
It is the first meeting in program history against both opponents. The games will be broadcasted locally on 1260AM KKSA with Jeremy Bryant on the call.Â
