SAN ANGELO – The No. 2/6 Angelo State women's basketball team will travel to face West Texas A&M in Canyon on Thursday, Jan. 12 at 5:30 p.m. and follow it up with a road game against Texas Permian Basin at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14.
The Belles are 12-0 on the year and 6-0 in the Lone Star Conference. It is the best start to a season since starting 16-0 in 2003-04. ASU ranks in the top 25 nationally in fewest turnovers (170), free throw attempts (227), scoring margin (16.9) and scoring offense (81.2). Opponents are forced into 19.7 turnovers per game and ASU holds a 5.50 turnover margin which is tops in the LSC. The Belles also lead the league in assist to turnover ratio with 1.03 per game.
West Texas A&M enters with an 11-4 overall record and 4-2 in the LSC. WT and ASU played three epic games last season with two going into overtime. The last game in Canyon went triple OT with the Belles winning 112-111. Sasha Watson leads the Lady Buffs in scoring at 14.9 points per game. Alle Decker is second on the team at 11.6 points per game.
Texas Permian Basin has a 5-7 overall record and is 2-4 in the LSC. The Falcons defeated Angelo State last season 80-74 in Odessa. The last ASU win in Odessa came on December 2, 2013. Briana Caro and Niva Taito lead UTPB with 11.9 and 11.2 points per game.
Jasmine Prophet earned LSC Defensive Player of the Week honors this week one week after being named the LSC Offensive Player of the Week. The senior led ASU in scoring and rebounds last week. She scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for her second straight double-double of the season. The Jackson, Mississippi native has scored in double figures in five straight games and eight this season. Â She averages 12.7 points per game and 7.4 rebounds per game. She is ranked in the top 10 of both points and rebounds while also leading the LSC in blocks with 17 this season.
Taylor Dorsey leads the league in scoring at and in steals with 31. Her 19.3 points per game is No. 21 nationally. She also leads the teams in assists (50) and is No. 3 in the league at 4.1 assists per game. Dorsey has scored in double figures in 10 times and surpassed the 20 points mark eight times this season.
Chenelle Pelle has been a key contributor off the bench that averages 29.1 points per game for ASU. Pelle is the top scorer off the bench at 8.3 points per game. The junior leads the team in field goal percentage at a .608 clip She also grabs 4.6 rebounds per game. She has scored at least 10 points in five games this season.
Lexi Murphy is second on the team in rebounds at 5.6 rebounds per game. The senior is also adding 8.1 points offensively. She has grabbed at least six rebounds in the last four games for the Belles. She is ASU's top 3-point shooter at 36.4-percent and is tops in free throw percentage at .364.
Madi Greenwood has been another key off the bench contributing 7.8 points per game. She is tied for third on the team with 26 assists and has sunk 36.1-percent of her 3-pointers. The junior also made 13 steals and is one of five players with at least 10 steals on the year.
Keanna Kelly is one of the Belles top free throw shooters making 84.8-percent from the charity stripe. She is tied with Greenwood for third on the team with 26 assists and scores 7.5 points per game. The Arlington native has made 14 steals and 14 three pointers on the year.
Bria Frierson is one of eight players to score at least seven points per game. The junior has averaged 7.4 per game this season and is fourth on the team in rebounds with 4.5 per game. She is hitting 48.5-percent from the field and has recorded 15 steals on the season.
Christina Robinson is averaging 7.2 points per game and is coming off a career high 17 points against Texas A&M-Commerce. It was her fourth game of the season with at least 10 points. She is second on the team with 28 assists and 17 steals.
Kiahna Curry, Bethany Ross and Shauna Coleman have seen action off the bench as well. Curry is averaging 2.2 points per game in 8.0 minutes played this season. Ross made two rebounds in the win over Texas A&M-Commerce while Coleman hit a pair of free throws and grabbed two offensive rebounds against Commerce.
