SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State women's basketball bounced back from a Thursday night loss by defeating Cameron 84-70 Saturday afternoon in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.
The Belles (5-2, 3-1 LSC) had four of their five starters score in double figures for the game including Marquita Daniels (24), De'Anira Moore (21), Keanna Kelly (16) and Dezirae Hampton (12).
"It's always great to see that kind of balance in your offense, and really that's how our team is set up to play," Angelo State women's basketball coach Renae Shippy said. "I thought we played our best whole game today and I was glad to bounce back with a win."
Cameron jumped on top to start the game, scoring the game's first five points. De'Anira Moore got the Belles on the board just over two minutes into the game, hitting an and-one jumper as well as the foul shot, and Marquita Daniels quickly tied the game up on the next ASU possession with a layup of her own.
Moore and Daniels finished as the top two scorers for Angelo State in the game, as Daniels set a new career high with 24 and Moore had her second straight game with 21 points. The two also led the Belles on defense as Moore recorded four blocks and Daniels had five steals and a pair of blocks as well.
The Aggies did not falter though, and stayed on top of the Belles for much of the opening period. With 2:52: left in the first, however, Daniels hit from behind the arc and put ASU up 19-18. They would not trail for the rest of the game.
Daniels' three-pointer sparked a 10-0 run for the Belles, and they went into the first break of the game up 26-20.
Cameron started the second quarter with an 8-2 run to tie the game up at 28-28 at the 7:03 mark, but a jumper from Moore and a three-pointer from Dezirae Hampton gave the Belles the lead again.
Hampton recorded her fifth game in double figures against the Aggies with 12 points and also fell just one rebound short of a double-double with at eam-leading nine rebounds.
The two teams battled back and forth for the rest of the second quarter with ASU never building more than a six-point lead until the 1:33 mark, when Keanna Kelly hit a three-pointer to put them up 44-37. The scored stayed there as the teams went into the locker room for halftime.
Kelly finished with 16 points and got the majority of them from behind the arc, hitting a team-high four three pointers.
Angelo State held off Cameron as they made another run and pulled within two early in the third quarter and went back up by seven after Madi Greenwood assisted yet another Daniels three-pointer at the 6:50 mark.
The Aggies had another small run late in the quarter to close the gap back to three, but ASU pushed back with a bucket from Moore and a pair of free throws from Kelly to regain some breathing room. When the quarter ended, the Belles held a five-point lead.
Kelly boosted the lead more with a three-pointer to start the final quarter, and Daniels followed with a layup to give the Belles their first double-digit lead all game.
ASU finished out the game with its best defense of the game, limiting CU to just 11 points all of the fourth quarter to hold onto their double-digit lead until the final horn sounded.
The Belles will be off next week for finals, but will be back on the court for the Daytona Hoops Classic on December 18 and 19 in Daytona Beach, Florida.
