#23 Belles Blast Falcons on Senior Day

SAN ANGELO, Texas – It was only fitting that on senior day, the top three scorers for the #23 Angelo State University women's basketball team were seniors as Marquita Daniels, Maria Delgado and Dezirae Hampton combined for 65 points as the trio alone outscored UT Permian Basin as the Belles picked up the 95-52 Lone Star Conference victory Saturday inside Junell Center.

Daniels led all-scorers with 25 points on 10-16 shooting, going 3-7 from long range, along with seven assists, three rebounds and two steals. Delgado scored her most points in an Angelo State uniform with 21 points on 7-15 shooting, 5-11 from three, along with eight rebounds, two assists and a steal. Hampton rounded out the three in double-figures with 19 points on 7-14 shooting, including a pair of three-pointers and she made it a double-double with 10 rebounds. Mikayla Blount added three points and six rebounds being the other senior on the floor. Sidney Smith was also honored before the game being the fifth senior.

Angelo State (20-4, 15-3 LSC) caught fire from three-point range connecting on 13-33 (39) and went 34-71 (48) overall from the field while also adding a 14-16 (88) effort at the foul line. There wasn't a category the Belles didn't dominate as they held the advantage on points off turnovers (19-5), second-chance points (14-3), bench points (23-10), points in the paint (34-10) and fastbreak points (16-0).

The defense forced 17 turnovers and held UT Permian Basin (4-21, 1-17 LSC) to a 31 percent clip (20-65) from the field and 5-24 (21) from long range.

After the Falcons took the lead just over three minutes in at 5-4, a layup by Daniels a minute later ignited a 9-0 run that put Angelo State on top the rest of the way. During the run, the seniors accounted for seven of the points with Hampton knocking down a three and after a jumper by Delgado, De'Anira Moore closed the run with a layup at the 3:16 mark for the 13-5 lead.

Asia Davis and Hampton closed the opening quarter with a pair of baskets that left the Rambelles with a 17-8 lead through the first 10 minutes.

The second quarter was an offensive explosion with Angelo State outscoring UT Permian Basin 35-12, putting together an 11-1 run early in the quarter to jump the lead to 32-11. Another 12-2 run followed with Daniels ending the run with a trey at the 1:55 mark that had the lead at 46-15.

Daniels then closed the half in style hitting back-to-back jumpers to send the game into halftime with the Belles in control at 52-20.

The Rambelles pushed the lead out to 35 a couple of times before an offensive rebound and put back by Delgado had the lead at 37 late in the third as Angelo State went in to the final 10 minutes holding a 73-37 lead.

It was fitting in the fourth quarter that the seniors again would take over with Delgado sinking a pair of early three-pointers and then Blount dialed long distance to move the lead out to 85-39. A pair of Delgado free throws with three minutes to play had Angelo State out to their largest lead of the night at 90-42 before finishing up the 95-52 victory.

Lemia Ntor-Ue led UT Permian Basin with 16 points as three players reached double-figures.

Angelo State remains tied for first in the Lone Star Conference with West Texas A&M winning at Texas A&M-Commerce to keep the teams tied at 15-3. Eastern New Mexico entered the weekend in a three-way-tie but fell at both Texas A&M-Commerce and Tarleton State this week and sit third at 13-5.

The Rambelles will close out the regular season on the road this coming week as they will play at Midwestern State on Thursday starting at 5:30 p.m. and then at Cameron on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m.
