SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team (20-4,15-3 Lone Star Conference) will look to finish strong this weekend as they take on Midwestern State and Cameron. Depending on the result of West Texas A&M's Thursday game against Texas Woman's, the Belles could finish in first place in the conference standings leading into the Lone Star Conference tournament next week in Frisco, Texas.
The Belles have been led by preseason player of the year Marquita Daniels, who is averaging 16.2 points, five rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 3.1 steals per contest. She is coming off a 25 point performance on Senior Day against UT Permian Basin, making ten of her sixteen shots from the field. She is joined in double figures by De'Anira Moore and Dezirae Hampton. Moore is averaging 14.2 points and a team leading 7.7 rebounds per contest. She also ranks second on the team in field goal percentage as she shoots 54 percent from the field. Hampton averaging 12.7 points and is second on the team in rebounding with 7.3 per contest. She also ranks second on the team with 35 total steals. With 46 made three pointers on the season, she is averaging 1.9 made three pointers per game while shooting 37 percent from behind the arc.
The Belles have had several other significant contributors this year. Maria Delgado averages 9.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per game while shooting a team leading 39 percent from behind the three point line. Asia Davis averages 8.1 points and 2.5 rebounds per game, shooting a team leading 81 percent from the free throw line on 63 attempts. Catara Samuel averages 6.3 points and 2.8 rebounds per game while providing stout defense on the perimeter. She also ranks third on the team with 21 steals. Essence Johnson averages 5.1 points and 4.3 rebounds per contest while shooting 60 percent from the field, which leads the team. Mikayla Blount averages 4.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per game while shooting 36 percent from behind the three point line.
On the season, the Belles have outscored their opponents by a whopping 17.7 points per contest. They also outrebound their opponents by nearly eight boards per game on average and score seven more points off turnovers per contest.
Midwestern State comes into Thursday's contest with a record of 11-14 (8-10 Lone Star Conference). They have won their previous three games and have a 9-3 record at home this season.
