LUBBOCK – The Angelo State women's basketball team (26-5) will look to continue their dream season as they will take on Lubbock Christian in the NCAA DII South Central Regional final Tuesday evening. The game will be hosted by LCU as they were the higher seed in the region. The winner of the game will advance to the NCAA DII Elite Eight, which will be contested next week in Columbus, Ohio.
All season, the Belles have been led by senior guard Marquita Daniels. This season, she has played in 30 games, averaging 30 minutes per contest. She has made 43 percent of her shots from the field, making 49 three pointers, and has also made 83 free throws. Daniels is just 41 points shy of 1,000 in her Angelo State career. She is coming off a 23 point performance in the regional semifinal game against West Texas A&M. For the season, she is averaging 17.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 2.9 steals per contest.
Junior De'Anira Moore has been the steady post presence for the Belles this season. She has played in all 31 games, averaging 24 minutes per contest. She leads the team in field goal percentage at 55 percent, making 182 shots and 80 free throws. She also leads the team in rebounds with 226, 100 of which are at the offensive end of the floor. She is coming off an 18 point performance in the regional semifinal against West Texas A&M. On the season, Moore averages 14.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per contest.
Senior guard Dezirae Hampton is enjoying an excellent end to the season and is the only Belle to start all 31 games this season. She leads the team in total minutes with 993. Hampton has made 144 shots this year, 59 of which are three pointers. She is shooting 35 percent from three point range on the year. She also ranks second on the team in rebounds with 223. Hampton is coming off a game which saw her bank in a crucial three pointer with time running down to send the regional semifinal game against West Texas A&M into overtime. For the year, Hampton averages 12.9 points and 7.2 rebounds per contest.
Senior transfer Maria Delgado has come on really strong in the postseason with big shooting performances in several games, most notably the Lone Star Conference tournament semifinal. She shoots 45 percent from the field on the season and leads the Belles with 65 made three pointers. She leads the team in three point percentage at 42 percent and has also made 40 free throws. She is coming off a 16 point performance in the regional semifinal against West Texas A&M. For the year, she is averaging 10.8 points and six rebounds per game.
Junior Asia Davis has provided a steady presence at the guard position all season, starting 29 of 31 games. She has made 82 field goals, 19 of which are three pointers, and leads the team in free throw percentage at 79 percent. For the season, Davis averages 8.2 points and 2.6 rebounds while also recording 66 assists and 20 steals.
Junior Catara Samuel has provided a certain energy on the defensive end of the floor all season. She has played in all 31 games and averages 22 minutes per contest. She is shooting 41 percent from the field and has made 71 field goals, 13 of which are from three point range. She has also made 40 free throws. For the year, she averages 6.3 points and 2.5 rebounds per contest while also recording 24 steals.
Junior Essence Johnson has excelled in her role off the bench all season, playing in 29 of 31 possible games. She ranks second on the team in field goal percentage at 54.6 and has also made 9-19 three pointers, providing a different dimension out of the post. She has also made 27 free throws. For the season, Johnson averages 4.9 points and 4.5 rebounds per game with almost half of those coming on the offensive end. She has also recorded 21 steals.
Senior Mikayla Blount has played in 29 of 31 games this season. She has made 31 field goals, 25 are which are three pointers. She shoots 34 percent from three point range. She has also made 15 of 20 free throws this year. On the season, she is averaging 3.5 points and 2.8 rebounds in her 19 minutes per game. She has also recorded 26 assists and 13 steals.
Junior Dearria Watson has played in 29 of 31 games this season, averaging six minutes per game. She has made 12 field goals and 12 free throws, averaging 1.2 points and 1.1 rebounds per contest while also recording six steals and four blocks on the year.
This season, the Belles have averaged 79 points per contest while giving up just 62.5 for an astonishing point differential of 16.5. They have made 43 percent of their shots while only allowing opponents to shoot 37.5 percent from the field. They also make eight three pointers and 14 free throws per contest. ASU also outrebounds their opponents by seven per contest.
Lubbock Christian comes into Tuesday's contest with a record of 28-5. They have won seven consecutive games, including regional wins over Tarleton State and Colorado Mesa. They have gone 14-0 at home this season.
