FRISCO – The Angelo State women's basketball team used a dominant first quarter to run past the Texas Woman's Pioneers 85-57 Friday afternoon in the Lone Star Conference tournament quarterfinals. With the win, the Belles move to 23-4 on the season and will face Tarleton State Saturday evening at 8:30 p.m.
The Belles were led by Marquita Daniels, who had a double double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. She also posted five assists and three steals. She was joined in double figures by Dezirae Hampton, Asia Davis, and Catara Samuel. Hampton had 17 points, shooting 3-6 from the three point line. Davis had 15 points and three assists while shooting 5-10 from the field. Samuel had an excellent game with 14 points, making 5-6 shots from the field and 2-3 from the three point line.
Other strong contributors included De'Anira Moore, who had eight points and seven rebounds, Maria Delgado, who had seven points and nine rebounds, and Essence Johnson, who tied for the team lead in rebounds with 11.
ASU got out to a 27-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and led 48-21 at halftime, making the second half effectively a formality. For the game, the Belles held TWU to 33.3 percent shooting from the field and 23.5 percent from the three point line while shooting 43.7 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from the three point line.
The Belles will be in action again on Saturday evening at 8:30 p.m. against Tarleton State in the LSC semifinals.
