SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team returns to the friendly confines of the Junell Center at Stephens Arena for a pair of games against Texas A&M-Kingsville on Thursday (5:30 p.m. tip-off) and Texas A&M International on Saturday (2 p.m. tip-off); the Belles will also hit the road on Monday to San Antonio to face St. Mary's in a make-up for their game originally scheduled for January 2
nd.
Entering a stretch of three games in five days this weekend, the Belles just came off a three-game-in-five-day stint where they played UTPB, Western New Mexico and West Texas A&M in five days, going 2-1 in that time.
The Belles were led this past week by the performances of
Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant, who averaged a double-double over three games, scoring 11 points per game and grabbing 11 rebounds per contest. The Amarillo native is shooting 45.2 percent from the field and is averaging 10.2 points per game and 6.6 rebounds per game this season.
Blakely Gerber leads the team in scoring with 11.3 points per game while
Payton Brown averaged 10.9 points per contest while averaging 34.8 minutes per game on the court, third-most minutes per game in the LSC. The Belles' point guard is also second in the conference with 4.4 assists per game.
Madeline Stephens is eighth in the LSC with 7.7 rebounds per contest; the freshman is averaging 9.3 points per game on 47.4 percent shooting from the floor and has also blocked a team-high 14 shots this season.
SCOUTING THE JAVELINAS
Texas A&M-Kingsville is 15-6 overall on the season and 8-2 in conference play; they are currently second in the LSC standings.
The last time these two teams met back on December 4
th in Kingsville, the Javelinas led from start to finish en route to a 61-43 victory over the Belles.
SCOUTING THE DUSTDEVILS
Texas A&M International is 14-6 overall on the season and 5-4 in conference play, right below the Belles in the conference standings in ninth place.
The Belles struggled against the Dustdevils back on December 2
nd, losing 98-67 in Laredo. The Dustdevils were led by Raiana Brown's 32 points on 14-of-19 shooting from the field.
SCOUTING THE RATTLERS
St. Mary's enters this week with a 2-19 overall record and are 1-9 in conference play, with their lone conference win coming on January 29
th against Western New Mexico.
The Belles defeated the Rattlers back on December 13
th inside the Junell Center in their last meeting; four Belles scored in double digits while Tonia Bilic (17 points, 12 rebounds) and Hannah Wilson (15 points, 15 rebounds) both recorded double-doubles in that 69-55 win for the Belles.
Following this trio of games, the Belles will hit the road next weekend to face UAFS and Oklahoma Christian.
