ODESSA, Texas – Senior
Camille Perkins registered a game-high 18 points, but it was not enough as the 'Belles dropped a very physical contest to the University of Texas-Permian Basin, 83-80, in Odessa Tuesday night. The Rambelles rallied from a 19-point deficit but were unable to regain the lead as a trio of 'Belles fouled out en route to their first loss of the season.
In addition to her 18 points, Perkins collected five assists and two rebounds in the set back. Ten of her points came from the charity stripe.
Paige Weishuhn and
Krysta Martinez each tallied 13 points, while
Lindsey Mahone and
Giselle Aguirre totaled 11 points each. Mahone added nine rebounds and two assists, while Weishuhn collected seven boards.
UT-PB started off the game on a 7-2 run with buckets by Tammy Acosta and Teisha King, but Angelo State stormed back to tie the game at seven with a lay-up by Mahone followed by a trey from Weishuhn. Martinez, who tallied a game-high 10 points in the first-half, came off the bench and notched a lay-up after collecting an offensive rebound to give the 'Belles their first lead of the night (9-7).
The Rambelles found the zone and built an eight-point lead (22-14), their largest of the game, on a lay-up by sophomore
Ashley James. However, ASU's lead would not last long as the Falcons took advantage of 13 first-half turnovers by the Rambelles and evened the score at 29 on a Miesha Blackshear jumper.
The Falcons reclaimed the lead on a Cashena Mathis lay-up (29-31). As Mathis went up for the lay-up, she was fouled and went to the line sinking her only free throw of the half to give the Falcons a three-point advantage (29-32). The 'Belles managed to tie the game once more as both of Mahone's free throws found the net (32-32). However, UT-PB would end the first half on a 5-0 run to take a 37-32 lead into the locker room.
Texas-Permian Basin held the 'Belles scoreless for the first five and a half minutes of the second half as the Falcons surged ahead to a 45-32 lead. UT-PB eventually pushed its lead to 19 points, but the 'Belles continued to fight. It was an uphill climb for the Rambelles as three 'Belles (Weishuhn, Martinez and Perkins) fouled out in the second half.
However, Angelo State showed its resilience when it battled back and closed the gap at seven points (68-75) on a jumper by
Morgan Youngblood. The Rambelles continued to chip away at the Falcons' lead and eventually came within five (75-80) on an Aguirre trey. Angelo State came within two (80-82) after Mahone banked a shot after a missed three-pointer by Aguirre. Mahone was fouled as her shot went in and she took to the line deliberately missing the free throw but her team was unable to get the rebound. ASU committed an intentional foul on Miesha Blackshear. The UT-PB guard took to the line and sank the first free throw, but missed the second. With just 1.5 seconds on the clock, the 'Belles could not get the shot off in time and dropped their first loss of the season by a score of 83-80.
The Rambelles out-rebounded the Falcons 44-37, however, the 'Belles committed 22 turnovers and missed 15 free throws which proved to be the difference in the game.
The Falcons were led by Roshell Barnes who collected a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Teisha King tallied 16 points with four assists and three boards, while Miesha Blackshear recorded 14 points and six rebounds.
The 'Belles will return to action when they host Texas A&M-Commerce on Dec. 2, at the Junell Center. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. Live stats and live video are available on AngeloSports.com
