Cold-Shooting Belles Fall to Eastern New Mexico, 65-53

Three Rambelles scored in double figures Wednesday night, but the Angelo State women's basketball team was unable to overcome an early 6-0 deficit as the Belles dropped a 65-53 Lone Star Conference match-up to Eastern New Mexico.

With the loss the Belles fall to 9-8 overall and 2-3 in the LSC South, while the Zias improve to 4-13 and 2-3 in conference action.

Junior Paige Weishuhn and senior Camille Perkins each tallied a team-best 11 points for the Belles. Perkins added eight rebounds and two assists, while Weishuhn contributed five boards and two blocks before fouling out. Freshman Giselle Aguirre was the third Belle to score in double figures as she notched 10 points with one rebound. Sophomore Lindsey Youngblood recorded nine points, six boards and two steals, while sophomore Lindsey Mahone totaled six points, four boards, three steals and also fouled out of the game.

The Rambelles were down from the start as Eastern New Mexico put up six consecutive points in the opening three minutes. The Belles were unable to get on the board until Weishuhn sunk a jumper at 16:55 (6-2). Angelo State was able to come within one (8-7) on a Morgan Youngblood trey, but the Zias would counter with a 10-0 run to extend their lead to 11 points (18-7).

ASU's shooting was cold in the first half as the Belles were 4-for-26 (15.4 percent) from the floor and 2-for-15 (13.3 percent) from beyond the arc. By the end of the first twenty minutes of action, the Rambelles were down 30-15.

The second half was much of the same as the Belles trailed by as many as 19 points (34-15). The Rambelles were able to pull within eight points of the Zias on three separate occasions in the second half, but ASU was unable to get any closer.

The Belles shot 33.3 percent (10-for-30) from the floor in the second half and they made 20 percent (3-of-15) of their three point shots. ASU shot 71.4 percent (15-for-21) from the free throw line and outscored the hosts 38-35 in the second half. However, the Belles fell to Eastern New Mexico by a score of 65-53.

The Zias were led by Precious Herrin's double-double as she tallied 19 points and 10 rebounds in the game. She also added a game-high four blocks. Vanessa O'Neal was the game's leading scorer with 21 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals. Cat Clay came off the bench and registered 13 points for ENMU.

The Belles return to San Angelo for a Saturday evening contest against Incarnate Word at 5:30 p.m. Live Stats and live video are available for the Lone Star Conference game.
