Hall of Honor
Jerry Austin, a native of Lubbock, played football for the Rams from 1969-72 and ended his career with 3,743 yards. To this day, he ranks as the top rusher in ASU history and his total ranks eighth on the Lone Star Conference all-time list. Grant Teaff, the head coach for Angelo State from 1969-1971 and Baylor University from 1972-1992, was quoted as saying, “I was blessed to coach a lot of great running backs and I always compared them to Jerry Austin.”
He also holds the ASU records for career carries with 861 and career yards per game, averaging 106.9 yards per outing during his career. Austin led the Rams and LSC in rushing both in 1970, with 1,263 yards, and 1971, with 1,201 yards. He also finished his career with 45 touchdowns.
Awarded the J.W. “Dough” Rollins “Offensive Player of the Year" in the Lone Star Conference in 1970.
A two-time first team All-Lone Star Conference squad in 1970-71.
All-Texas College Team “Outstanding Freshman of the Year” in 1969 by UPI.
Three-time first team All-Texas College Team selected by United Press International in 1970-71-72.
LSC Silver Anniversary second team (1960-1984)
He earned second team NAIA All-America honors in 1971 and was chosen as an honorable mention AP Little All-America that same season. He was also selected to the Gridiron's All-Small College All-America first-team in 1972.
During his senior year, ASU made its first ever appearance in a bowl game as a four-year institution, earning selection into the Ardmore Shrine Bowl.
Austin was inducted into the Lubbock Independent School District Athletic Hall of Honor in 2012.
